The army, navy and air force figures from Moose Jaw’s war memorial outside Peacock Collegiate have been carefully removed to be restored and cleaned.
Retired Lt.- Col. Gerry Carline organized for the figures to be taken to the welding department at SIAST for the work to be carried out.
He said he has wanted to restore them for about five years. He received permission from the Prairie South School Division to carry out the cleaning.
“I’m doing it on behalf of all those who died and I’m very dedicated to preserving the memory of those whom we owe our freedom,” he said.
Carline said the three figures have a lot of rust on them. The army soldier is also missing a chin strap for his helmet and the other is damaged.
“On the Army figure the left ankle and right shoe are completely rusted through. They will sandblow them all completely down to bare metal and remove all the spots that are rusted out. Then they will be sealed so there’s no incursion of water in the future and they will be repainted in the highest quality paint we can get and they will be painted silver,” he said.
